What is Independent Living?

Last modified on June 28th, 2021

Starting out on a new phase in our lives tends to bring with it plenty of questions. There is always so much to consider and so many areas that we might need greater clarity in. In this article, we wanted to take the opportunity to clear up a common misconception – one relating to the independent living lifestyle we make possible for our residents here at Keilor Village.

Independent living is not the same thing as living in an aged care facility. It’s a term signposting a broader philosophy – one that sees greater efforts made to assist those who might otherwise require hands-on care to remain independent and living on their own terms.

For us at Keilor Village, independent living informs how we have developed the setting, services and provisions that we make available to our residents. Let’s dive in on what this all means and get a look at what life looks like at Keilor Village.

The Appropriate Setting

This first aspect to consider in our approach to independent living is the setting. In Keilor Village, we make every effort to ensure that our residents are comfortable navigating their homes and the village around them. All it takes is some clever design!

We’ve sought to avoid the inclusion of features that can present problems as we age. Level changes such as ledges and steps are minimised throughout the village, and railings are provided wherever appropriate. As for the living spaces themselves, you’ll find that each of our villas and apartments are designed so that you won’t have to worry about remaining safe around the home.

The Support of Our Services

Continuing to live independently as we age is made easier with the support of top-quality services. For the safety and security of our residents, we have a 24-hour emergency call system that is supported by on-site staff. We also provide additional in-home services such as a weekly cleans, laundry and meal preparation to those who want this support.

Health professionals visit our communities on a regular basis to see residents in the clinic in the community centre. For your convenience, deliveries of prescription medicines and other healthcare products from the local pharmacy can be arranged.

Provisions for Changing Circumstances

Continuing to live independently is all about having the choice to scale your services when the time is right for you. Residence in Keilor Village, and in our sister communities in Taylors Hill, Latrobe Village in Reservoir, Cameron Close Village Burwood, Bundoora Village, Long Island Village in Seaford and Burnside Village, comes with the assurance that you’ll have access to the support you need when you need it.

Residents in our communities have priority on making the move into our serviced apartments.
