Our Favourite Day Trips Around Melbourne

Last modified on December 18th, 2023

Grandpa and granddaughter day trip in Melbourne

Autumn is almost here, but there is still some life left yet in the warm but rarely hot weather we’ve been blessed with this summer. If you, just like every Melburnian, have been trying to make the most of the summer following the lockdowns of 2020, then you’ll no doubt be wanting to get out for just a few more trips before we settle in for the more subdued winter months ahead.

We’ve put together a short list of our favourite day trips and short jaunts in and around Melbourne – the perfect way to make the most of a free day to yourself, or to enjoy with friends and family. Take a look and get planning!

Pay a Visit to the Heide Museum of Modern Art

Melbourne’s own Heide Museum of Modern Art is one of Australia’s most important cultural institutions – and you can find it tucked away in Bulleen! Starting out as a gathering point for artists like Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester, John Perceval and Albert Tucker, the former grazing property and dairy farm fronts onto the Yarra River, and is home to some truly beautiful and culturally important art. We recommend heading over and seeing it for yourself! Nearby Ivanhoe is something of a hub for great food and coffee – so you won’t be hard pressed to find a few stops and make a day of it!

See the Fairy Penguins of Phillip Island

At just under two hours from the CBD, Phillips Island is just a touch further afield than some people might consider for a day trip. But let us tell you that there is plenty to do and see out that way that will make it very much worth your while! There’s plenty of very highly regarded food and drink to enjoy, including our favourite, the Wild Food Farm and Café to make a stop at for lunch.

But the one thing everyone raves about, and that you won’t find elsewhere, is the nightly arrival of the Phillip Island Fairy Penguins. An estimated 4,000 fairy penguins make their way back up the beach each night to their burrows, and you can see it yourself! With international travel on hold for now, there might never be a better time to see this for yourself than right now!

The Yarra Valley

Victoria’s own world-renowned Yarra Valley wine region is less than an hour drive from the Melbourne CBD – and it’s an absolute must-do for any lover of wine. But while the clear draw is tasting some of Australia’s most highly regarded cool-climate wines, there is still plenty to do for those looking to make the drive both ways.

Stop in at the Yarra Valley Dairy, and definitely consider heading into Healesville and stopping for lunch at Innocent Bystander. For those wanting to make a day of it with young ones in the family, there’s also the Healesville Sanctuary to check out – just remember to book ahead!
