Mother’s Day Activities for Seniors

Last modified on May 9th, 2023

“Mum’s the word”. “Mother knows best.” “The mother of invention.” All of these familiar English idioms reflect the role that our mothers play in our lives: as nurturers, protectors, and creators. That’s why it’s so important to ensure mums of all ages – especially seniors – feel loved and appreciated throughout the entire year. And what better way to extend your heartfelt gratitude and lifelong appreciation than to honour your mother, grandmother, aunty, sister or mother figure than on Mother’s Day?

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 14 May 2023. If you haven’t made any plans, we can help you get started. We’re sharing some helpful Mother’s day activities for the elderly that everyone will be able to get involved in – from children to grandchildren.

The origins of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is a holiday that originated in the United States in the early 20th century. The holiday was first proposed by Anna Jarvis, who wanted to honour her own mother and all mothers for their sacrifices and contributions to their families and society.

The first official Mother’s Day was celebrated in 1908, when Anna Jarvis organised a memorial for her mother in West Virginia. The holiday gained popularity quickly and was soon celebrated in other states, with efforts to make it a national holiday.

In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day, a national holiday to be celebrated annually. The holiday became increasingly popular around the world, with different countries adopting their own traditions and customs for celebrating motherhood.

Mother’s Day activities for the elderly

If you’re looking for clever ways to create memorable moments with loved ones, here are some creative ideas to inspire you:

  • Brunch or Tea Party: Host a brunch or tea party in honour of all the mothers in the community. Seniors can enjoy delicious food like scones and cakes, and spend time socialising with their friends.
  • Flower Arranging: Seniors can participate in a flower arranging activity where they can create a beautiful bouquet or floral crown for themselves or for a loved one.
  • Art Activity: Conduct an art activity where seniors can make handmade cards or create a painting to give to their loved ones. This is great for grandkids too, as they can produce a gorgeous gift that is sure to warm the heart of your grandmother or mother.
  • Movie Night: Host a movie night where seniors can watch classic films and enjoy snacks and drinks.
  • Scrapbooking: Set up a scrapbooking station where seniors can create a personalised memory book filled with photos and mementos of their loved ones.
  • Cooking Class: Conduct a cooking class where seniors can learn how to make a special Mother’s Day dish and enjoy it together.
  • Spa Day: Spoil her like she deserves, and treat her to a pampering service like massages, facials, or manicures. Everyone can join in for some well-deserved rest and relaxation. This activity is fun for all ages.
